The Ouija board, also known as a spirit or talking board, typically consists of letters, numbers, and other symbols arranged in a board format. Participants use a planchette, a small heart-shaped piece, to spell out messages allegedly dictated by spirits. While some consider it a harmless game, others warn of potential consequences when tampering with forces beyond our understanding.
On November 18, 1933, a tragic incident unfolded when 15-year-old Mattie Turley accidentally shot her father, Ernest, twice in the back while attempting to shoot a skunk on their property. Initially, Mattie asserted that the discharge occurred due to a trip and fall. However, as her father succumbed to the wounds, Mattie altered her narrative.
She claimed that during a session with a Ouija board, in the company of her mother, Dorothea, she received an eerie directive from the “spirit world” instructing her to end Ernest’s life. The alleged purpose was to pave the way for Dorothea to marry a man who would “make her happier.” Following the Ouija board’s message, Dorothea reassured Mattie that she would not face legal consequences for carrying out these supernatural orders.
Despite Dorothea’s denial of any involvement, a jury rendered her guilty. Three years later, the Supreme Court of Arizona overturned the conviction, citing the trial court’s refusal to consider evidence suggesting that Mattie, who had a troubled childhood in juvenile detention and severed ties with her mother, may have been dishonest in her testimony.
